In a closet of the chapel of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas, is a box of abandoned plans. Decades’ worth of blueprints, mockups, and hopes for a new building sit untouched.
Originally constructed in 1959, the structure has limped along for at least the last 30 years. The main nave comprises remnants from older construction projects that have not aged well. The building’s foundation rests on old telephone poles that are rotting into the ground. The roofs leak. Asbestos hides under every carpeted surface. Reverend Zac Koons occasionally hears a raccoon skittering in his office ceiling.
