Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has said his administration is working to revitalise the Akwete weaving industry by removing longstanding barriers to its growth and positioning it as a globally competitive indigenous textile enterprise.
Otti made this known on Tuesday while receiving the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and his wife, Priscilla Otti, during a visit to the Akwete Weaving Cooperative Society in Akwete, Ukwa East Local Government Area of the state.
The governor said his administration had developed a comprehensive plan to modernise the industry and proposed a partnership with the First Lady to establish a world-class production hub for local weavers.
He warned that the indigenous textile industry could lose market share to machine-made imitations from countries such as India and China if innovation and technology were not embraced.
