Seychelles has officially opened its telecommunications market to Starlink, giving households and businesses access to satellite-based broadband and marking a significant shift in how internet services are delivered across the island nation.

The soft launch of Elon Musk’s satellite internet service was announced on Wednesday during a joint press briefing at State House led by vice-president Sebastien Pillay and the Seychelles Communications Regulatory Authority (SCRA).

The move introduces a new competitor into Seychelles’ broadband market at a time when governments across Africa are increasingly turning to low-Earth orbit satellite technology to bridge connectivity gaps, particularly in remote and underserved communities.

Vice-president Pillay said the arrival of Starlink aligns with the government’s broader digital transformation agenda, which aims to provide reliable, affordable and high-quality internet access while maintaining fair competition in the telecommunications sector.
