Tension has gripped the Port Harcourt Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) as members prepare for the branch election scheduled for today.
The controversy stems from allegations that the Electoral Committee failed to comply with the branch’s bye-laws by not publishing the voters’ register ahead of the poll.
At the NBA House in Port Harcourt, lawyers were seen divided into opposing camps one group insisting the election proceed as planned, while another demanded its suspension over the alleged irregularities.
Security has been heightened at the venue, with operatives of the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) deployed to maintain order and prevent possible clashes.
