Beneath the western desert of Egypt, roughly 185 miles west of Luxor, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a complete Byzantine-era Christian city dating to the 4th century — including a basilica church, private homes, watchtowers, a fortress, and an archive of nearly 200 inscribed documents recording the everyday life of its inhabitants.
