Last week, in the first part of Leadership Lessons from Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector, I reflected on five foundations of sustainable leadership: balancing immediate performance with long-term vision, treating sustainability as strategy, pursuing operational excellence, investing in people and building trust through ethical conduct. Those lessons focused largely on the internal foundations of enduring organisations. Yet institutions do not operate in isolation. Their survival also depends on how intelligently they respond to technology, communities, environmental pressures and the wider transformation of society. These external forces now shape the next set of lessons.
The sixth lesson, therefore, is to embrace technology and innovation.
The future will not necessarily belong to the largest companies or those with the greatest reserves. It will belong to organisations that can learn, adapt and reinvent themselves.
