The Nigerian Senate has clarified that the ongoing amendment to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Establishment Act does not introduce any fresh prohibition on preaching or hawking inside commercial vehicles.
In a statement on Monday, the upper chamber noted public concerns over the issue but stressed that the provision has existed since the 2007 FRSC Act.
It was originally Item 36 in the Second Schedule and is now renumbered as Item 49.
The offences are backed by Section 10(4) of the 2007 Act and Regulation 220 of the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012.
The Senate emphasized that the measure focuses on commuter safety and does not restrict street preaching or religious activities in public spaces.
“It is about the safety of commuters and other road users and is not intended to undermine any religious activity,” the statement said.
