The International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law, Intersociety, has raised concerns over the mass arrest of traders in Ozomagana Building Materials Market, Onitsha, Anambra State.
DAILY POST reports that the rights group is concerned over the escalation of conflicts in the market.
It has, therefore, petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, as well as the Anambra State Government, calling for an end to what it called repeated harassment, arbitrary arrest and detention of leaders of the Ozomagana Building Materials Market.
Intersociety said it was unacceptable that a civil dispute involving Modebe Enterprises Limited and the Ozomagana Building Materials Market Association was being criminalized by the police.
The organisation cautioned that the continued use of police officers to intervene in the matter was escalating tensions instead of resolving the crisis.
