US consulate in Abuja to shut down as Trump shrinks Africa embassies

….Embassy in Lagos unaffected

The number of United States (US) diplomatic missions processing visa applications on the continent will be cut from nearly 50 down to just 20 in the coming weeks.

Based on reports from the Associated Press, this will reduce the number of American embassies and consulates in Africa who are authorised to process visas for foreign nationals seeking to travel to the United States.

Under a directive approved last week by Marco Rubio, secretary of State, the State Department will concentrate and restrict its African consular operations to just 20 designated “hubs”.

The change is to take effect in June.

This reduction forms part of the Trump administration’s wider strategy to restrict immigration to the US by tightening the issuance of both immigrant and non-immigrant visas.

The policy specifically targets individuals who travel on temporary visas and subsequently overstay their permitted time.
