The family of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has declared that he will not leave the Sokoto Custodial Centre unless directed by a court order.
In a statement issued by Prince Emmanuel Kanu on behalf of the Okwu-Kanu family of Umuahia, Abia State, the family emphasized that Kanu’s imprisonment in Sokoto is central to his pending appeal before the Court of Appeal.
They cautioned against extra-judicial interventions, stressing that any voluntary relocation could undermine his legal arguments.
The family noted that Kanu, who is representing himself (pro se), has argued that his sentencing to life imprisonment in Sokoto reflects judicial bias.
They pointed to Justice J.K. Omotosho’s 2025 ruling, which ordered Kanu to serve his sentence in Sokoto after describing him as someone who “hates the North with a passion.”
According to the family, this directive forms a substantive ground of appeal, as it raises questions of fairness and impartiality.
