Coalition Urge Opposition Leaders to Unite Behind Single Candidate for 2027

A coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians, known as the G-100, has called on opposition parties to rally behind a single presidential candidate in the 2027 elections, warning that Nigeria’s democracy faces grave risks if the opposition remains fragmented.

In a seven-page open letter titled “The Doctrine of a Necessary Democratic Opposition”, dated August 2, 2026, the group appealed to leading figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, and others to set aside personal ambitions and negotiate a united front.

Signed by notable personalities including former APC National Vice Chairman (North-West) Salihu Lukman, ex-lawmaker Nnenna Ukeje, and Professor Anthony Kila, the letter stressed that Nigeria’s democratic survival depends on presenting voters with a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The coalition warned that the greatest threat to Nigeria is not only economic hardship but the weakening of democratic institutions through a divided opposition.
