The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has urged Nigerian mothers to embrace exclusive breastfeeding, describing it as one of the most cost-effective ways to raise healthy children while helping families avoid the financial burden of purchasing breast milk substitutes.
The agency said exclusive breastfeeding not only provides infants with complete nutrition during the first six months of life but also protects both mother and child from several health complications, strengthens immunity, improves cognitive development and reduces household healthcare costs.
The message was delivered during a two-day zonal media dialogue on the dissemination of key advocacy messages for the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week, held in Enugu for journalists and stakeholders from Benue, Cross River, Enugu, Imo and Ebonyi states.
Speaking at the event, UNICEF Nutrition Specialist, Dr Ngozi Onuora, said breast milk remains the safest, healthiest and most economical source of nutrition for infants, eliminating the need for expensive breast milk
