Kano senator Hanga leaves NDC, fuels APC defection speculation

The senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Rufai Hanga, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, ending weeks of speculation over his political future and setting the stage for fresh political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Hanga, who is the Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The resignation followed weeks of speculation over the senator’s political future after he held a series of high-profile meetings with President Bola Tinubu, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and senior leaders of the All Progressives Congress, fuelling widespread reports that he was preparing to leave the NDC.

The party had repeatedly appealed to him to remain, insisting until his resignation that he was still a member despite the growing rumours.
