Stock market opens August with N289bn gain

The Nigerian equities market began the month of August 2026 on a bullish note, recording N289bn in gains on the first trading day of the month. The All-Share Index gained 446.85 points, representing an appreciation of 0.18 per cent to close at 245,730.53 points.

Similarly, market capitalisation rose by N289bn to close at N158.614tn. The market’s positive performance was driven by price appreciation in large and medium-capitalised stocks, including Vitafoam Nigeria, MTN Nigeria Communications, NASCON Allied Industries, First Holdco, and HBM Nigeria.

Commenting on the day’s trading performance, an analyst at Apt Securities and Funds Limited noted that the market’s recovery was backed by renewed investor interest.

“The positive close reflects improved investor confidence following two consecutive sessions of losses, as bargain-hunting activities outweighed selling pressure,” the analyst stated.

Despite the positive index performance, market breadth closed negative as 38 decliners outpaced 24 advancers.
