How Nigerian startup Breet “makes crypto spendable”

Nigerian startup Breet “makes crypto spendable”, with co-founder Kayode Faturoti telling Disrupt Africa “that’s the whole company in three words, and everything we build bends toward it”.

Launched in February 2021 by Faturoti and Balogun Usman, Breet allows users to receive crypto into their Breet wallets and have it automatically converted into dollars, naira or cedis, or settled straight into their bank account without even opening the app. 

“We were the first platform in Africa to fully automate that offramp flow, and every feature we’ve shipped since is just another route to the same destination: making crypto something you can actually use,” Faturoti said.

“You can buy crypto when you need to get in, and swap between coins when you need to move. Businesses can invoice in crypto and get settled in local currency, so getting paid in bitcoin feels no different from getting paid in naira.”

Crypto for the real world

With Breet, users pay their bills directly, so crypto goes straight to real-world use without a detour.

“Big players run large volumes through our dedicated OTC desk. And developers plug our API straight into their own products to embed crypto payments, wallets, and instant settlement, which is the quiet, important part: Breet started as a product and has become infrastructure. Other companies now make crypto spendable by standing on rails we built,” said Faturoti.
