Scientists in Cambridge say they have taken a major step toward building vaccines that could protect against entire families of viruses—including future threats that have not yet emerged.
A research team from the University of Cambridge and biotechnology spin-out DIOSynVax has successfully completed the first human trial of a new “universal” coronavirus vaccine designed using artificial intelligence.
A Thursday report obtained by our correspondent from the varsity’s website and titled, “New ‘universal vaccine’ technology could protect us from future virus outbreaks,” disclosed this.
The early-stage trial involved 39 healthy volunteers and found the vaccine to be safe, with no significant side effects reported.
Researchers say the vaccine is designed not just for one virus, but for a whole group known as Sarbeco coronaviruses, which includes SARS-CoV-2 (the virus behind COVID-19), SARS, and related bat viruses that could potentially spill over into humans in future outbreaks.
“This represents a fundamental new
