Muslims Reject Terrorists’ Demand for Sharia Law Over Oyo School Abduction

The Muslim community in Oyo State has distanced itself from the Sharia-related demands reportedly made by terrorists holding teachers and pupils abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

The group said the criminals behind the attack do not represent Islam and should not be allowed to hide under religion to justify their actions.

The position was made public as schools across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State shut down in solidarity with the victims still in captivity.

The latest development comes weeks after gunmen attacked schools in Esinele, Yawota and Alawusa communities on May 15, abducting teachers and pupils in one of the worst security incidents recorded in the state in recent years.

Reports indicate that the abductors demanded the release of some detained terrorist commanders, payment of ransom, two Hilux vehicles and the implementation of Sharia-related law before the victims could regain their freedom.
