Rabiu Umar: Regulation must keep pace with a changing energy sector

Nigeria’s energy sector is changing rapidly, and our regulatory approach must evolve just as fast.

A few weeks after this year’s Nigeria Oil & Gas (NOG) Energy Week, this reality remains front of mind. Many of the discussions at the conference reinforced what we are already seeing across the industry. Expectations of the regulator are changing alongside the market itself. Operators want greater clarity. Investors want predictability. Consumers expect a market that is safe, competitive and well regulated.

During my remarks at the conference, I highlighted three priorities that are central to our work at the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA): implementing the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), strengthening transparency and accelerating the digitalization of our regulatory processes.
