Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has launched a full-scale investigation into the payment of teachers’ salaries and the implementation of the new minimum wage across the state.
On Monday, the governor inaugurated a seven-member panel led by Prof. Malami Shehu Gulumbe to scrutinize salary structures and wage compliance for primary school teachers.
The committee is tasked with identifying irregularities, verifying local government funding to education authorities, and ensuring transparency in wage disbursement.
Idris emphasized his personal commitment to the probe, noting his awareness of teachers’ previous earnings and the adjustments he approved under the new wage policy.
He urged the committee to act with diligence and impartiality, warning against compromise.
The governor explained that the decision followed consultations with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and outcomes from a recent town hall meeting.
The panel will also distinguish between professional and non-professional teachers, apportion responsibility where necessary, and recommend corrective measures.
