1. Another attempt by opposition parties to form an alliance and present a single Presidential candidate against the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has been slated for August 18. 2. European Union, EU, delegation to Nigeria says it will dispatch an Electoral Expert Mission, EEM, made up of two to four independent experts to monitor next year’s general election in the country. It said in a statement debunking reports that it declined an invitation by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to observe the elections, that the experts would be accredited by the electoral umpire.
3. Security forces in Enugu State have successfully apprehended three perpetrators of the August 2 kidnap during an attack on St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Inoyi-Affa, Udi Local Government Area. Cash believed to be ransom payment, arms and ammunition were recovered during the operation. During the gun duel that accompanied the operation, one of the suspects was neutralized.
4. A Nigerian Army Colonel, Mohammed Ma’aji, accused of involvement in an alleged plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu, has said his actions were driven by patriotism and frustration over what he described as worsening conditions in the country.
