For years, farmers in communities along the Ebonyi-Benue axis have battled a challenge that goes beyond poor harvests: getting what they produce from their farms to market.
In many of the rural communities, producing food is only half the struggle. The other half is finding a reliable road through which the produce can reach consumers.
But that reality could soon change with the ongoing construction of the Trans-Sahara Highway, a major federal road project linking communities across the South-East, North-Central and adjoining regions.
For farmers and residents along the corridor, the project is not simply another stretch of asphalt. It represents a possible end to years of isolation and the beginning of easier access to markets, better transportation and increased economic activity.
During an inspection of the project in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, David Umahi, the Minister of Works, described the highway as a strategic economic corridor
