The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has urged for the Masaki programme (Nutrition Food Production through locally available food in community settings) to be expanded across all 27 local government areas in Jigawa State, aiming to enhance maternal and child health, nutrition, and sanitation.
During her visit to inspect a Masaki food demonstration at Zangon Buluntu village in Ringim Local Government Area, UNICEF Chief of Field Operations and Emergency in Nigeria, Judith Leveillee, emphasized the significance of this initiative.
Leveillee, who was in Jigawa for a two-day visit, referred to the Masaki programme as a “golden opportunity” to provide children with a healthy beginning in life, especially by concentrating on the essential first 1,000 days of a child’s life.
She elaborated that the timeframe, extending from pregnancy to the first two years of a child’s existence, is vital for nutrition, healthcare, and early childhood development, highlighting the importance of interventions during this period.
