Ugochinyere loses Minority Leader bid in House of Reps

The lawmaker representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency in Imo State, Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere (also known as Ikenga Ugochinyere), has lost his bid to become Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.  

  

 On Wednesday, the House passed a resolution at plenary barring first-term lawmakers from holding principal offices. 

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Babajimi Benson, who represents the Ikorodu Federal Constituency in Lagos State.  

  

The resolution clarified Order 7, Rule 15 of the Standing Orders of the House of Representatives, which states that only members with cognate legislative experience shall be eligible for appointment as principal officers. 

  

 This decision effectively disqualifies first-term members, including Ugochinyere of the Action Peoples Party (APP), from contesting for the Minority Leader position. 

Ugochinyere had been nominated last week by some opposition lawmakers to succeed Kingsley Chinda, who stepped down after emerging as the APC governorship candidate for Rivers State.
