The Federal Government has inaugurated the Nigeria Health Financing Observatory aimed at enhancing accountability in health expenditures by monitoring the allocation, release, and utilization of funds while connecting financing to health results.
Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, the Director-General of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), made this announcement on Tuesday in Abuja during the second day of the inaugural Nigeria Health Finance Research and Learning Forum, titled, “Evidence and Learning for Nigeria’s Health Financing Future: Building a Locally Led Research and Learning Ecosystem.”
Ohiri explained that the observatory was created to tackle ongoing issues related to fragmented health financing data and to provide dependable evidence for policy and decision-making at both the national and subnational tiers.

He emphasized that the nation could no longer afford to depend on the status quo for health financing decisions, pointing out that inadequate data should not serve as an excuse for inaction.
