The Senate has approved a three-month extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, pushing the deadline to September 30, 2026.
The resolution followed a motion moved on Wednesday by Senator Tahir Monguno who represents Borno North and doubles as the Senate Chief Whip.
The Senate noted that the 2025 appropriation act was enacted to provide funding for government programmes and projects aimed at promoting economic growth, infrastructure development, national security and the welfare of Nigerians.
The Senate also noted that despite substantial releases made to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), a significant portion of the funds remains unutilised due to procurement timelines, project implementation challenges and other administrative processes.
The Senate warned that failure to extend the implementation period could lead to the abandonment of critical projects, wastage of already committed public resources and disruption of ongoing government interventions.
