Labour Party ratifies 1,211 candidates for 2027 elections, Otti warns against division

The Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party (LP) has formally ratified 1,211 candidates for various elective positions ahead of the 2027 elections.

 

The party announced the decision at its national executive council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

 

The development follows the conclusion of its nationwide primaries held on May 27 for 1,491 positions, including 28 governorship, 99 senatorial, 307 house of representatives, and 776 state assembly seats.

 

On May 30, Chibuzo Okereke, a governance expert, emerged as the party’s presidential candidate through a consensus process involving LP members and stakeholders.

 

 

Speaking at the NEC meeting, Alex Otti, governor of Abia, urged the candidates to embrace unity, warning that internal divisions could undermine the party’s chances in the next elections.

 

“Elections within the party should never create permanent divisions. The contest is over; the assignment has just begun,” Otti said.
