Tinubu approves new university in Kaduna, renames institute after Yar’adua

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology. The announcement was made during his 2026 Democracy Day address on June 12.

The President said the decision was taken in recognition of the contributions of the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua to Nigeria’s democratic development and national unity. He described the former Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, as one of the architects of modern democratic Nigeria whose vision of national partnership helped shape the country’s democratic journey.

“Among the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, we honour General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his vision of national partnership,” Tinubu stated while announcing the approval.

As part of activities marking Democracy Day, the President also paid tribute to pro-democracy activists and announced national honours for several individuals who played significant roles
