Falana to FG, governors: Negotiating with terrorists attracts 20-year jail term

 Prominent human rights advocate Femi Falana has strongly condemned the Federal and State governments for negotiating with and rewarding terrorists, declaring the practice entirely illegal.

 

Delivering the keynote address titled “Rising Under Pressure-Human Rights in an era of insecurity, Economic Strain & Democratic Uncertainty” at the Amnesty International Second Annual General Meeting in Abuja on June 13, 2026, Falana warned that government officials are committing a grave offense under Nigerian law by holding talks with insurgents.

 

He noted that it is public knowledge officials of the Federal Government and some State Governments have been holding meetings and negotiating with terrorists and bandits, which has led to thousands of ‘repentant’ criminals being forgiven and given cash gifts of undisclosed sums of money.
