The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State chapter, has said local government autonomy is yielding tangible dividends across the state, citing ongoing investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, rural roads, agriculture and empowerment programmes.
The Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area and Akwa Ibom ALGON Chairman, Uwemedimo Udo, stated this on Monday following an inspection tour of projects executed by council chairmen across several local government areas by the Grassroot Accountability and Empowerment Programmes in Nigeria.
The GAEPN delegation, led by Eze Okonkwo, visited Oron, Etim Ekpo, Etinan, Nsit Ibom, Ikot Ekpene, Uruan and Uyo local government areas to assess the impact of local government autonomy on grassroots development.
Speaking on behalf of ALGON in the state, Udo said the increased financial and administrative independence enjoyed by local councils had enhanced service delivery and accelerated development at the grassroots.
