The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has faulted the recent court order deregistering several political parties, describing the move as unconstitutional, undemocratic, and harmful to Nigeria’s democratic growth.
In a statement posted on his X handle Tuesday, Adebayo argued that suppressing political parties through judicial action undermines democratic inclusion.
His reaction followed a Federal High Court judgment directing the deregistration of parties including the African Democratic Congress and Accord Party.
“Deregistration of political parties is a bad omen for our democracy. There is no constitutional, legal or moral basis for these platforms to be truncated by government-backed judicial decree,” Adebayo said, noting the irony of the ruling coming just days after Nigeria marked Democracy Day.
Although his party was not affected, Adebayo insisted that silence in the face of injustice would betray democratic principles.
He pledged solidarity with the affected parties, ADC, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, Accord, and Zenith Labour
