Lagos club outlines pillars of sustainable democracy

The Secretariat Membership Club, Ikeja, has identified citizen participation, accountability, unity in diversity and shared responsibility as critical ingredients for building a viable and sustainable democracy in Nigeria.

The position was contained in a statement issued by the club’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Adesuyi, following a Democracy Day event organised to commemorate the June 12 celebration.

Speaking at the event, the club’s President, Ayodeji Randle, said democracy could only thrive when citizens actively participate in governance and leaders remain accountable to the people.

According to him, participation remained the foundation of democracy because every citizen must have a voice in the affairs of the nation.

“Democracy means every citizen has a voice. That’s why we’ve set aside time for open discussion. All citizens are equal,” he said.
