A train driver was killed and 99 passengers injured after two trains collided near Bedford in the United Kingdom, triggering what officials have described as one of the country’s most serious rail accidents in recent decades.

British Transport Police confirmed that nine passengers remained in critical condition, while three others suffered life-changing injuries. Thirty-two passengers sustained serious injuries and 56 suffered minor wounds.

The crash occurred when a passenger train travelling from Corby to London St Pancras collided with the rear of another service that had stopped on the tracks due to a reported safety fault.

Survivors recounted scenes of chaos and devastation, with several likening the aftermath to the site of a bomb blast.

One passenger, Brett Byatt, said most occupants of his carriage were injured during the collision.

“I’d probably say 90 per cent of the people on my carriage had injuries. Everyone else had either a serious wound that was bleeding profusely or a situation where they couldn’t stand or move,” he told news men.

Byatt stated that passengers were thrown violently from their seats following a loud impact.

Another survivor, Pete Knapp, described the scene as catastrophic.

“When I got up I saw people with bloodied faces and people’s legs looked broken, and there was smoke everywhere,” he said.

Teresa Itabor, who was travelling to London to celebrate her birthday, recalled hearing a massive bang moments after departing Bedford station.

“My head hit the seat in front of me. I didn’t know what was going on,”
