Former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a national emergency on insecurity, stressing that Nigeria’s escalating security challenges demand urgent, extraordinary measures and a coordinated national response.

Makarfi made the call while speaking with journalists at his residence in Kaduna on Sunday.

He also addressed issues ranging from the 2027 general elections to the ongoing crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former governor, who also served as PDP national chairman, acknowledged that uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999 is a notable achievement.

However, he expressed concern that the country’s failure to effectively tackle insecurity is undermining governance, economic growth, and social stability.

“Security should be the number one priority because of its direct impact on economic activities and national development,” he said, adding that significant progress on security would automatically ease hardship and boost the economy.

Makarfi advised against mere criticism of the Tinubu administration’s security efforts, instead
