Rivers State Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju has removed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Oyigbo Police Division following serious allegations of extortion and abuse of office.
The action came after a rights activist publicly accused the DPO on Friday of extorting ₦500,000 from a man who was arrested and detained at the station without any apparent offence.
The activist shared evidence of the payment on social media.
The activist also criticised the DPO for allegedly filing what he called a ridiculous charge against a woman involved in a dispute with her estranged husband.
She was accused of stealing her own children and subsequently remanded in a correctional facility.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, confirmed that the command had received the complaints.
She said the DPO was immediately removed to allow for a thorough and impartial investigation.
