The Nigerian presidency has strongly rejected calls by Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Peter Obi for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, describing the demand as baseless and a needless distraction from governance.
In a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the presidency argued that Obi’s comments, comparing Tinubu to the UK Prime Minister’s voluntary exit were “misplaced” and reflected a “selective and distorted view of Nigeria’s realities since 2023.”
Onanuga stressed that Nigeria operates a presidential system with a fixed four-year term, unlike the UK’s parliamentary model.
He pointed to Tinubu’s recent electoral victories in Ekiti, Nasarawa, Enugu, Ondo, and Rivers as proof of his popularity, urging Obi to wait for the 2027 election rather than “harangue the President out of office” via social media.
The statement highlighted Tinubu’s achievements in security, noting the rescue of captives, neutralisation of terrorist leaders, and deployment of advanced technologies.
