Abia enforces okada ban in three communities, violators to pay ₦50,000

The Abia State Government has commenced full enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycle operations in designated areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia, citing security and public safety concerns as the primary reasons for the move.

The state Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

He said the ban, which took effect on Monday, June 22, forms part of broader efforts to strengthen security, enhance internally generated revenue and restore order in the state’s urban centres.

Kanu disclosed that under the new directive, any motorcycle found operating within restricted zones would be impounded immediately.

“All motorcycles operating on Abia roads, whether commercial, private, courier or delivery, must now be registered under an expanded enumeration exercise that began 18 months ago,” he said.
