The Niger State House of Assembly on Tuesday suspended its plenary sitting indefinitely due to unresolved issues with the state executive arm.
The decision followed a motion moved by Mohammed Abubakar-Kabir, member representing Chanchaga Constituency (popularly known as Ustaz), who urged the House to halt proceedings until all pending matters with the executive are fully addressed.
Though he did not publicly specify the exact issues, Abubakar-Kabir warned that posterity would judge the current lawmakers harshly if they continued to overlook the disagreements. He stressed the need to protect the independence of the legislature.
The motion was seconded by Abdulrahman Gambo, representing Borgu Constituency.
A counter-motion was moved by Jibrin Ndagi-Baba, member for Lavun Constituency, who argued that suspending the day’s business was unnecessary. The debate became heated, nearly turning rowdy, with a majority of members supporting the indefinite suspension.
