Lecturers may down tools as AAU-ASUU protests non-implementation of 2025 agreement with Nigerian govt

The Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to embark on an industrial strike over the alleged failure of the Federal Government to implement the 2025 agreement reached with the union.

DAILY POST reports that the Chairman and Secretary of ASUU in the university, Dr. Cyril Oziegbe Onogbosele and Dr. William, stated this in a statement made available to newsmen in Benin City.

The statement said that the union has commenced full mobilization of its members for a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike, noting that the action follows the persistent failure of the state government to implement the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement in the university.

The duo added that the decision to embark on the industrial action was taken at a congress held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

According to the statement, the union declared that its patience has been exhausted.

“For six months, we have waited for concrete steps toward implementation, yet none have materialized.

“It is with profound disappointment that we state that every effort to persuade the university authorities and the Edo State Government to honour the agreement has been met with trivialization and disregard.

“In a resolution adopted after the well-attended congress on the main campus in Ekpoma, the union resolved that effective from the July 2026 salary, payment must reflect the CATA component and all other allowances stipulated in the agreement. All accrued arrears since January 2026 must be paid in full.
