Lionel Messi has refused to rule out playing at the 2030 FIFA World Cup after becoming the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer.
The Argentina captain continues to shine at the 2026 World Cup, where he has scored all five of his country’s goals across their opening two matches. After netting a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory over Algeria, Messi followed up with a brace in a 2-0 win over Austria.
The 39-year-old’s latest goals took his World Cup tally to 18, surpassing former Germany striker Miroslav Klose’s previous record of 16 and making him the highest-scoring player in the history of the men’s tournament.
With Argentina already assured of a place in the Round of 32, attention has begun to shift from Messi’s current exploits to the possibility of him featuring at the centenary World Cup in 2030.
