World Cup: FIFA introduces new yellow card rule to reduce player suspensions

World football governing body FIFA has introduced a new yellow card amnesty rule for the 2026 World Cup, reducing the risk of player suspensions as the tournament enters its knockout phase.

Under the new regulation, all yellow cards accumulated during the group stage will be wiped before the start of the Round of 32, giving players a clean disciplinary record heading into the knockout rounds.

FIFA will also apply a second amnesty after the quarter-finals, ensuring that players cannot miss the semi-finals or final because of yellow cards collected in earlier knockout matches.

The rule change comes as the 2026 World Cup expands from 32 to 48 teams, increasing the number of matches and the likelihood of players accumulating bookings throughout the tournament.
