The National Emergency Management Agency has commenced the process of developing a National Policy for Relief and Rehabilitation Intervention aimed at addressing coordination gaps in disaster response and strengthening Nigeria’s framework for relief, rehabilitation and recovery.
Speaking at the National Stakeholders’ Workshop on the Draft National Policy for Relief and Rehabilitation Intervention in Abuja on Monday, the Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, said the policy became necessary as Nigeria continued to experience more frequent and complex disasters.
Umar said, “Nigeria continues to experience increasingly frequent and complex disasters, underscoring the need for a coordinated and well-defined framework for relief and rehabilitation interventions. While significant progress has been made in emergency response, the absence of a comprehensive national policy has created gaps in coordination, standards, and implementation.”
