The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to social media commentator Garus Gololo in his trial for alleged cybercrime and defamation of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia admitted Gololo to bail in the sum of N5 million with one surety in the same amount. The surety must be a Grade Level 12 officer in the federal civil service.
The court adjourned the matter until September 22, 2026, for continuation of trial.
Gololo is facing a seven-count charge filed by the Nigeria Police Force, bordering on cybercrime, cyberstalking, defamation, and incitement. He had earlier pleaded not guilty and was remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Prosecutors allege that Gololo published a viral video and Facebook posts claiming that Senate President Akpabio said northerners must support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 or risk being expelled from Nigeria. He reportedly added that Akpabio stated “with or without the North, Tinubu would win.”
