The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has announced plans to invest ₦100bn in a 50‑megawatt solar power project to boost electricity supply across the region.
Managing Director Mohammed Alkali disclosed the approval at a press briefing in Abuja, noting that power remains the most critical requirement for economic recovery and development in the North-East.
He said the project will deploy modular solar systems to schools, hospitals, markets, and other public infrastructure across the six states.
Alkali explained that the initiative is part of the commission’s third phase of development, shifting from recovery to expansion.
With 61 per cent of residents lacking access to electricity, he stressed that modular solar systems would deliver direct benefits to communities and sustain investments in education, healthcare, and commerce.
The commission also unveiled plans to promote clean transportation by deploying 10,000 solar-powered tricycles and minibuses assembled in Nigeria, supported by solar charging stations.
