
Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka has been praised online after Nigerian writer and filmmaker Onyeka Nwelue, shared how the literary icon quietly settled his outstanding hospital bill following a major knee surgery.
In a heartfelt post on social media, Nwelue recounted telling Soyinka that his knee surgery had cost about ₦39 million, with about ₦10 million still owed to the hospital.
According to him, Soyinka immediately offered to help, saying: “Let me get to Lagos this Friday and see what I can send.”
Nwelue said he subsequently forwarded the hospital’s bank details to the Nobel Laureate.
A few days later, Soyinka followed up to ensure the transfer had gone through, writing: “Receiving no notification from you, I asked my bank for confirmation that the money has been sent. Forwarding the affirmation documents separately from the bank in case you need to track the funds… I just wish to ensure it’s landed
