Gunmen reportedly attacked operatives of the Anambra State Police Command, killing at least two officers.
The state had experienced relative calm for several months following a sustained crackdown on criminal elements, particularly armed groups operating under the guise of separatist agitators, until Sunday night’s incident.
The attack reportedly occurred along the Awa–Ndiukwuenu–Ufuma Road, where the gunmen ambushed police officers on patrol and opened fire on them, leaving at least two officers dead on the road.
A commercial tricycle operator, popularly known as a keke rider, who witnessed the incident, said he was travelling along the route when he suddenly heard gunshots ahead and abandoned his vehicle to take cover in the bush.
In a voice note, he recounted the scene after returning:
“After sometime, I came out of the bush and retrieved my Keke and continued my journey, then I got to the spot where the thing happened.
