Cholera: Avoid self-medication, seek professional medical assistance – NMA warns

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Borno State Branch, has urged residents to desist from self-medication and seek professional medical care promptly following a confirmed cholera outbreak in the state.

Business Day had earlier reported that nearly 40 people have been confirmed dead and more than 5,000 cases recorded as a result of the crisis in seven local government areas of Borno State.

This was contained in a statement by Suleiman Muhammad Farusi, Publicity Secretary, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Borno State Branch, to journalists in Maiduguri on Thursday.

“Our wish is to draw the attention of residents of Maiduguri and its environs to the ongoing outbreak of cholera, a highly infectious diarrhoeal disease that can lead to severe dehydration and death if not promptly treated.
