Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Rivers United FC have confirmed that members of their squad and coaching staff were involved in a serious road accident while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for their President’s Cup Round of 16 clash against Nasarawa United.
The incident occurred on Thursday, June 4, along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt, shortly after the team departed its base en route to Awka City Stadium.
The club said the bus was carrying players and officials when the accident happened, but quickly moved to reassure fans that there were no fatalities or life-threatening injuries.
According to the statement, some members of the contingent sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention, while all affected individuals are in stable condition under close medical supervision.
