A faction of Boko Haram has reportedly released 416 women and children abducted from Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, according to the Borno South Youth Alliance.
The group, identified as Jama’atu Ahlis-Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (JAS), had held the victims mostly women and children with a few men since an attack on the community and a nearby military base earlier this year.
Samaila Ibrahim Kaigama, President of the Borno South Youth Alliance, which acted as mediator, confirmed the development, stating that sustained engagements, discussions, and humanitarian appeals led to the release.
The alliance had earlier verified the number of captives at 416 following direct communication with the abductors.
In previous videos released by the insurgents, the group had displayed the victims, insisting they were in good health, well-fed, and not subjected to torture or sexual abuse.
