Protesters Block Roads to Estadio Azteca Hours Before World Cup OpenerTension flared in Mexico City on Thursday as thousands of protesters blocked access routes to Estadio Azteca, just hours before the kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The demonstration, led by civil society groups, labour activists, student organisations, and relatives of missing persons, disrupted traffic around the stadium set to host the opening match between Mexico and South Africa.

Authorities deployed additional security and traffic management measures to ease congestion and ensure fans could reach the venue. 

Protest leaders told local media they deliberately timed the action to coincide with the World Cup opener, aiming to draw global attention to Mexico’s social and political challenges.

Organisers assured that the match and opening ceremony, featuring performances by Burna Boy and Shakira would proceed as scheduled, though the protests posed significant logistical hurdles.
