The federal government has declared Friday a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced the decision in a statement issued by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the ministry, on Thursday.

“June 12 remains a significant day in Nigeria’s history in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts made democratic governance possible in this country,” the statement read.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding democratic ideals such as the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.

He emphasized that a secure and stable environment is essential for democracy and national development, assuring that security agencies will continue to safeguard lives and property.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to use the holiday for civic reflection, recommitting to lawful conduct, responsible engagement, and national unity.

June 12 was officially designated as Democracy Day in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, in honour of the annulled 1993 presidential election
